The Acai Berry Diet. Take A Journey Through The Digestive Tract With Acai

The body is an incredible machine that operates with complete efficiency in breaking down food.   Let’s follow this nutrient packed fruit, the acai berry, from the point at which it hits your tongue and find out what happens during the journey of the digestive process.

Your taste buds send impulses to the brain for acai breakdown

The acai berry starts digestion in the mouth, with the teeth and tongue.   The food mixes with saliva as the teeth tear and grind the particles so the tongue can push it past the cartilaginous flap into the esophagus.    This flap closes off the airway so that we don’t choke and block food from traveling the opposite direction.

The mixture of acai pieces moves through a 10-inch muscular tube and is transported to the stomach.  It takes the acai less than 10 seconds to arrive in the stomach.

The taste buds are the key in telling the brain which enzymes to release to break down the acai.   Communications coming from little receptors that are in the grooves of the bumps on your tongue travel to the brain almost instantaneously.   Those receptors give your brain information and it releases the proper digestive enzymes.    This all happens before the fruit leaves your mouth.

Digesting acai fruit.  The Stomach, duodenum, pancreas, and liver work together

The acai berry becomes a paste in the stomach as the stomach muscles churn it around with gastric acids.   These acids also kill bacteria.  This lasts from 2-4 hours until it releases the paste into the top part of the small intestine.  The organs team up and go to work.  The duodenum secretes mucous and bicarbonate to neutralize any stomach acids.   The pancreas secretes juices to digest carbohydrates, proteins, acids, and fats.   The liver produces bile to aid in fat breakdown.

Most of the digestion and absorption of nutrients happen in the 10 ft. long small intestine from 3-5 hours after ingestion.  A lot happens in this amount of time.  The small intestine has millions of microscopic fingerlike protrusions designed to increase surface area.   The digested acai molecules pass through these fingers projections into the bloodstream and are carried to the liver.

Acai nutrients are separated and absorbed

The liver is an incredible processing organ that takes in the acai-nutrient-rich blood from the intestines and oxygen-rich blood from the heart.   It stores any vitamin A, fats, amino acids and glucose that are extracted from the blood.   It also destroys any toxins, alcohol, drugs, and any improper foods we put in our body.   Here the blood is cleansed and fortified.    Fats go in separate direction and are stored in the gall bladder while the food waste makes its way down to the colon for another 10 hours to several days before the food waste leaves the body.

Giving the body and liver nutrient-rich acai allows it to replenish itself with good cells.   We don’t want to make our liver work overtime.    The acai berry is a great source of amino acids, protein, fiber, vitamins and antioxidants.    Give your body acai to digest and give your liver a break.
